“Wild About Morels!”

Wow! Another season has quickly arrived! Once you see Lilacs blooming, it’s time for a walk in the woods! Now — if you’ve never hunted Morel Mushrooms, please don’t be discouraged if you don’t find them right away. It takes patients, a good eye and a whole lot of luck. Listed below are my hottest tips:

  1. Wear light clothing (Ticks are attracted to darker colors, plus
they are more easily seen) and use rubber bands around cuffs
and tuck your pants into your socks.
  2. Look for areas with dense tree growth (Your local parks
    are a great resource)
  3. Look for trees that are loosing their bark. (Not completely,
    but just starting to!)
  4. Walk slowly around trees. Using a stick, look under the leaves
covering the ground. The mushrooms my be 20-feet away!
  5. Oh! I’d go now! Before your neighbor picks them first!

Rain and Wind Made Fishing Challenging!

I decided to fish, instead of video record, this year’s crappie contest. It’s always fun to watch the boats come in and see kids faces light-up, as they proudly carry their prize-winning fish!

My friends (Brian and Ryan) and I planned to get up early and meet at the launch in Spring Park. It was 6:20 a.m. when we pulled into the Holiday gas station. We grabbed some coffee and donuts and in no time we were in the water!

I was surprised to see very few boats at the landing? The weather for that day called for 70% chance of rain. Perhaps, the threat of rain kept fair-weather fishermen off the lake? Continue Reading »

First Annual 2010 Chili Cookoff
was a great success!

This years 2010 Annual Chili Cookoff winner is…

FML Outdoor Editor,
Scott Nelson

15 couples attended this years event with 11 crockpots full of dangerously good chili!

I had my sites set on winning this event!

Each crockpot was given a number as guest sampled and voted on enormous amounts
of tasty chili.

Within our group of fire eaters — to my surprise,
none of the chili was very spicy?

“The Not-So-Little Nipper!”

On this day, I called Matt, and told him he needs to get down here! I broke my line and lost three, Lindy Little Joe, “Little Nippers” to some ferocious Piranh-like Crappie action!

“Spring Crappie Fishing is Just Around the Corner!”

Ah, Yes! The smell of the earth warming by the sun’s hot rays and the feel of a Black Crappie tugging at your line…

Wait! —Where’s my bobber?

Remember those feelings? Well, it’s almost that time! I just came back from checking the lake for open water. The ice is starting to recede from the shoreline. Soon, we’ll be in our waders — wetting our line and setting our hook into some awesome fighting fish!

Plan to protect your garden first.

Rabbit, mole or deer problems? You need to plan around them!

For instance, around the outside of a flowerbed, use a good groundcover spreading type of flowers like sedum, woodruff, or phlox to protect other animal attracting bulbs like tulips.

Phlox (Peppermint Twist)

“Tailgate Fishing!”

“The phone rings” – It’s  Grandpa, wondering if we want to go fishing. It didn’t take us long to get ready. With the pickup already loaded, all we needed was a cold beverage and a snack and we’re on our way!

Some of my best memories are sitting on the tailgate – talking smack and sharing laughs. It’s great to see my daughter enjoying the outdoors with Grandpa!

Do you hear complaints about your boat, trailer or other toys parked in the yard? Well, throw those blue tarps away! Once you see this camouflage man-cave, with all the conveniences of home, you’ll have a hard time finding an excuse not to go outside! Make a few holes in the bottom and you have a real nice fish house!

Preparing For Hunting Starts at Home

The hunting season has ended and it’s time to collect piles of camouflage and blaze orange laying on the floor and behind the seat of your truck. You’ve listen to complaints from your spouse all season-long, and finally — you decided it’s time to pick up your gear! Sound familiar? This scene is repeated daily in many hunting households.

“Life Is About New Experiences.”

While walking in the woods hunting Grouse, my daughter and I discovered
this log—displaying bright yellow clusters of fungi. It was a great
opportunity to discuss life’s opportunities and how nature
can surprise even the wisest of souls.
