On this trip, Chris and I took the canoe to a hidden lake near Minneapolis. There’s no boat landing and the lake is completely landlocked with lavishly designed homes. So we grabbed my canoe cart and proceeded to walk with our gear down a freshly paved bike path. There’s quit a few hidden gems like this one; perhaps in your backyard as well?

You may recall Dennis Hopper, in his best known performance, riding alongside Peter Fonda in the classic movie, “Easy Rider” but how many have ever seen the documentary footage of Mr. Hopper fishing in Thailand for the elusive giant squid?
In an expedition to be the first to catch this deep-sea creature, host John Lurie, fishing alongside Mr. Hopper are very entertaining as they prove to us…they know nothing about fishing in the contemporary film “Fishing with John.”

Many of us have fished the Annual Crappie Contest on Lake Minnetonka.
Gander Mountain is no longer a major sponsor to this event, but the folks
at Lord Fletchers will continue to hold-the-net until they receive support.
This is one of the largest fishing events in Minnesota!
Event Times:, Saturday, April 24 at 12 a.m. – 2 p.m. Fish must be submitted before 2:00 p.m. $5 pre-registration/$8 event day registration
On-site registration for the contest will be conducted between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Somewhat new to the waters, when you consider Minnetonka has 32-years
of experience — but don’t let that stop you! This event is full of prizes!
Local businesses stepped forward and contributed a wide variety of donations
in support of this community event! Now that”s what I’m talking about!
The contest will be held at Captain Jacks. Event Times: Sunday, April 25,
Registration 7 – 9 a.m., Fishing begins 9:00 a.m., Final weigh-in at 2:00 p.m.
$30 per boat, Maximum of 2 adults per boat and as many kids as you like.
Each boat will be allowed to weigh-in 10 crappies.
$ for Top positions, $ for biggest fish and FREE Grab bag for kids!
OK, here is my famous rig for catching crappies:
Add Crappie Candy and….Woo-Doggie!

“The phone rings” – It’s Grandpa, wondering if we want to go fishing. It didn’t take us long to get ready. With the pickup already loaded, all we needed was a cold beverage and a snack and we’re on our way!
Some of my best memories are sitting on the tailgate – talking smack and sharing laughs. It’s great to see my daughter enjoying the outdoors with Grandpa!

Our esteemed fishing buddy and this years 2009 Eelpout King showed off his talents, once again, with this 15-pound song-of-a-catfish. Eye witnesses to the event commented that landing this fish and beaching the boat on a mid-river sandbar, could have been handled better with a net! Do I see a pattern developing? Stoney, you deserve this fish!

This 36-inch Northern persuaded to consume their bait, as they were fishing for Walleyes on Birch Lake, Ontario, Canada. Nice Catch Greg!

It was a slow Crappie bite…all of a sudden, this 28-inch Northern Pike came along! If I were a Crappie, I’d hide too.

It was the first warm day in weeks. I’ve been down to the lake numerous times, but haven’t found fish in the shallows – until today! (more…)
