Ready for this season’s morel mushrooms harvest? This will be my first year hunting for these tasty little morsels! I have an idea that Southern Minnesota is going to be plentiful!
For the past two years, places like Rochester and Zumbro Minnesota have seen extreme flooding. As a result, massive areas of dead-fall have been created.
See our Outdoor Recipe section for Morel Mushroom Soup and other tasty concoctions.
My wife’s grandparents are Morels (Morel being the family name), and they live in Muscoda, Wisconsin where an annual festival is held revering these wonderful mushrooms. I find them most wonderful when soaked briefly in salty water (to dislodge insects), sliced, breaded (egg, then flour mixed with Corn Flake Crumbs and a dash of salt and pepper), and pan-fried in a little butter. Mmmm!
A wonderful thing about hunting Morel mushrooms is that it is very difficult to misidentify them. Even my kids can find them. We love searching hills in and near some of the apple orchards in southwestern Wisconsin.
Thank you for sharing! I’ve heard old abandoned orchards are a great place to find mushrooms! It’s hard enough to find Morels…Yet, an orchard left to grow wild. If I see one, I’ll be sure to stop!
